Billy Oatman & Trisha Reid Visit the Ocean State

Billy with Senate

On the weekend of September 27-28, PBA Exempt Bowlers Billy Oatman (picture above with Senate) and Trisha Reid will be in the Ocean State conducting an Adult-Child Bowling Clinic. The youth clinic will take place on Saturday, September 27th, at East Providence Lanes, and the Adult Clinic will be on Sunday, September 28th. Both Clinics will be from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m., and all participants will receive on the lanes bowling instructions from the pros along with lunch. There will also be a Meet & Greet Autograph Session, Question and Answer period and a bowling exhibition match where the Pros will face two of our areas top athletes. To learn more about these two bowling clinics, visit http://www.bowl.com/coaching/campsclinics.aspx#ri or contact Coach Marty at mjay43@aol.com.

Coach Marty Jones - A Top 100 Coach for the 4th Consecutive Year

Coach Marty

In the July 2008 issue of the Bowlers Journal International magazine, Coach Marty Jones was listed (for the fourth consecutive year) as one of the Top 100 Coaches in the country. Coach Jones, who basically is operating out of an area where bowling is not as highly regarded as it is in other parts of the country, was still able to make the list alongside many of the most prominent names in the sport today. That in itself is a direct tribute to the dedication and hard work that Coach Jones has displayed year after year after year. It also further proves that the success rate of the Senate Program and the efforts of Coach Jones are nationally recognized. We should all be very appreciative to have such an outstanding youth program and a coach like Jones in our area. This yearly selection proves that what Coach Jones is doing in the southern New England area is of a high standard, and quite beneficial to the entire sport.

BJI has only been listing these outstanding coaches for four years now, and Coach Jones has appeared on the list each and every year. Only four other New England coaches have ever made the list besides Coach Jones, and one of them was Coach Monica Scott (Jones' top assistant coach). Coach Jones and his efforts should never be taken for granted, and over the last six years no one has done more for the sport in our area than he has.

Coach Jones has coached and produced some of the best young talent that our state has ever had and many of his student athletes have been successful on all levels of competition (state, regional and national) under his tutelage. Through the success of his program and the contacts he has made over the years, Coach Jones has been able to obtain scholarships for his youth bowlers while making them some of the first athletes in the history of their states to earn NCAA bowling scholarships.

All year round, Coach Jones conducts practice sessions (open to any and all youth bowlers in the southern New England area) to further improve their bowling skills. In the off-season, he runs not one but TWO Sport Shot Summer Leagues known as "Filling da Frames", designed to better prepare area athletes for national tournaments. Because of Coach Jones' competitive involvement with youth bowling in our area, the opportunities and the individual talent level has really, really improved over the years.

Record Setters! Check them Out!

What a Perfect Day

pic of Nicole

On November 23rd, Nicole Trudell posted another of her many records here at Senate, but this one will forever stand in our history books. Nicole bowled a PERFECT GAME, and became the first Senate female to do so. I know a few of her past records did not stand over time, but this one cannot be broken. The best anyone else can do is tie her, and she will always be remembered as the FIRST. Since joining Senate, Nicole has improved a great deal. She works very, very hard with Coach Marty during the week, all year round and you just knew that one day it would happen. She also has two great parents that are very supportive to her bowling needs as well, and they too deserve a pat on the back for this amazing accomplishment. But give credit where credit is due, and that is with Nicole who threw the 300 game! This is just a wonderful, wonderful achievement. What a Perfect Day! Special thanks to the Union Camp League bowlers for showing their support to Nicole during this special moment by coming over to congratulate her. Nicole has now reached two of her three goals for this season, and we have only bowled a third of the season, there is plenty of time for her to obtain the last one. Great Job Nicole, congrat's!

You're Awesome Baby With a Capital "A"

Congratulations to Nicole "Baby Girl" Trudell, who smashed the Senate Major Girls Division Highest Series Record on November 2nd with an outstanding 768 series. Nicole bowled games of 244-269-255 and was somewhat disappointed that she didn't reach an individual and personal goal of an 800 series, but regardless - we on the other hand were very, very proud of her and her accomplishment here at Senate. Nicole, who is only a High School Junior, has already received recruitment packages & letters from many of the top ranked bowling programs in the nation despite the fact that we don't even have high school bowling here in RI. She is an honor student, as well as a talented athlete who has dreams of going to college on a NCAA bowling scholarship. Nicole currently averages 210 in league play, and in the language of Vitale-ism Nicole is a PTP-er (which stands for Prime Time Player). Vitale-ism comes from one of America's premier announcers-Dick Vitale himself. If he were to ever meet Nicole, then I am sure that he would say that she is "Awesome Baby with a Capital A" and a lock to be a future "Diaper Dandy" (meaning a freshman sensation). If you are unfamiliar with Mr. Dick Vitale, then visit: www.dickvitaleonline.com/about-dickieglossary.html for a better understanding of the Vitale-ism glossary. Gold Appears and Money starts to Fall

picture of Qwadaris

On September 21st, our first Record Breaking Performance of the 2008-09 Season took place when rookie Qwadaris Rembert a.k.a. "da Golden Child" (picture above) posted a NEW Junior Division High Game mark with an unbelievable 290 GAME. Qwadaris, age 13, started out with a spare in the first frame, and then threw the next 11-in-a-row while competing in the Northeast Junior Scratch Tour (NeJST) in Malden, MA. The old record was held by David "D-Money" Lewis and his impressive 280 game that held up last season when Jalen "Strikx" Scott-Jones tried to topple it. Jalen, who shot three-279 games a year ago, was unable to take D-Money's score down so many believed that it would stand for quite awhile.

That is why they say records are meant to be broken, and on this day Qwadaris caught fire to the tune of eleven in a row. Qwadaris, who once bowled with Senate back in the bumpers when he was much younger, returned this season. In only two weeks into the program, he has won a Gold Medal (first place finish at the NeJST), earned a spot on our talented Travel Team and now shattered a division record here at Senate. This could be a sign of greatness for this young athlete. To view our programs most updated records, click here. Congratulations Qwadaris and continued success.

Providence Senate Junior Bowlers On Fire Last Season

This past season, the Providence Senate Junior bowlers broke more League Records than any other season. This is definitely a sign that the young people are getting better and better. For starters:

Justin and Coach B

  • Justin Scott-Jones (pictured above right) became our programs "All-Time" Leading Scorer with a total of 120, 149 pins over the course of nine seasons. The old mark of 113,189 total pins was held by former star Brandon Medina (pictured above left).
  • Another of Medina's records fell when Rai Doblmeier shattered the season ending high average mark with an impressive 226. Rai also posted our highest series to date (809) and became our first male to win the State Pepsi Scratch Tour in "Back to Back" seasons.
  • David Lewis will go down in history as the first Senate Youth bowler to shoot an 803 series.
  • Jalen Scott-Jones & Nicole Trudell became our youngest Player-Coaches when both earned their USBC Level One Certifications at age 14. They also are the youngest Certified Coaches in the history of our state. These two 14 year olds became the youngest bowlers in Senate history to average 200 or better for an entire season. Nicole set Senate female marks for average (203), game (287) and series (786) plus a state female leading three Junior Gold Tournament appearances.
  • Senate youngsters Jadee Scott-Jones & Gazmine Mason posted the highest averages (185 & 168 respectively) and series (636) for prep age division bowlers in our 9-year history. We never had any bowlers age 11 or under average so high or bowl a 600 series in a season until they accomplished this feat. Jadee holds the record for the most 600s with eight and also for being the youngest to do so at age 10. Her 185 Prep Division average is also a state record.

NCAA Scholars - Check them out

Allyson
Jazmine pic
Courtney pic
Deanna pic

This past season four former Providence Senate members attended college on NCAA bowling scholarships and competed on nationally ranked college programs. All four ladies did very well with each one cracking the starting line-ups on their respective teams.

Of the four athletes, Allyson Smith (pic top left), of Taunton MA, probably had the most success from an individual standpoint while earning 1st Team All-Conference selection. Prior to this years selection, Allyson had two All-Conference 2nd Team selections in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. However, I would say that Allyson, from a team standpoint, had the least amount of success of the four young ladies.

Jazmine Price (pic top right), of Riverside RI, helped her nationally ranked bowling team reach the conference finals where they fell just short of winning the championship. Jazmine came up short on earning an all-conference selection as well. The good news is that Jazmine, who will be a sophomore this season has already been appointed the 2008-09 Team Captain, and that in itself speaks volumes. Click here to read the article in the Providence Journal about her accomplishments and scholarship.

Courtney Varin (pic bottom left), of West Warwick RI, also had a superb freshman campaign and like Jazmine she too fell just short of a conference championship. Individually, she finished with the ninth best average in the conference, which makes for an excited upcoming season. Courtney has had a few news articles written that have appeared in her local newspaper by Mr. James Bassett of the Kent County Times.

Our fourth female on a NCAA Bowling Scholarship is (Deanna Outland - pic bottom right), who only bowled in the 2nd half of the season for the same nationally ranked team that Jazmine attended. Deanna had such an immediate individual impact that she was quickly inserted into the anchor position of her very first tournament. Unfortunately, Deanna will not return to the college, but instead will attend a local school here in RI this semester. Click here to read the article in the Providence Journal about her accomplishments and scholarship.

We would like to wish each of these young ladies continued success not just with bowling BUT in life in general, and even more success in the classrooms. The program has many more outstanding up and coming bowlers. According to Coach Jones, "the best is yet to come." For information or film on any of the bowlers currently in the program, please contact Coach Jones at mjay43@aol.com. For a glimpse of one of our up and coming prospective athletes, click here.

Coach Marty's Summer League

Filling da Frames Summer Leagues were a Success

Improving Area Talent

The letters "K+P=S" may appear to look like an algebraic equation to most of you as you begin to read this article, but to the thirty-four athletes that participated in Coach Marty Jones' Filling da Frames Sport Shot Summer League(s), these letters have great value to the success that they have had in the sport of bowling over the summer. So, if I say "S" leads to "C" then you must be completely lost. Well, that is good and therefore you will continue to read this article in order to find out exactly what I am referring to.

AMF League

For the third consecutive summer, Coach Marty has been conducting the PBA Experience League better known as the "Filling da Frames Sport Shot Scratch Singles Summer League" in Rhode Island, which is geared towards improving area talent in Southern New England. With all the success over the years, the league has now expanded to include two locations East Providence Lanes (picture of league below) and AMF Lang's Lanes (picture of league above), plus a newly formed Adult Division at the AMF Lang's facilities. Although the majority of the summer league athletes hail from the highly successful Providence Senate Junior Program, it must be pointed out that both summer leagues were open to any and all athletes in the southern New England area that wanted to join.

EP League

The Summer League participants competed weekly, on an alternating PBA Experience Oil Patterns, in a four-game scratch singles pro-style format with a six point scoring system. In addition, Coach Marty also held a "K"nowledge and "P"ractice training session on a weekly basis that was open to all the participating athletes from both leagues. As a result, the athletes that attended these training sessions improved both physically & mentally while striving in our competitive atmosphere. The sole purpose of Filling da Frames is to improve the "S"kills of our area athletes through proper training techniques and a solid dose of a good bowling education. This proved to be quite successful, and as a result, the athletes at Filling da Frames have become so comfortable on the sport conditions that they have excelled in several scholarship events that were held over the summer. "To be honest with you, the athletes actually now prefer bowling on tougher lane conditions over house shots simply because their "C"onfidence is now off the hook - if you get my point", says Coach Marty. So there you have it knowledge plus practice equals skills, and skills leads to confidence k + p = s / s => c.

Dottie Howie

We had thirty-four league members this summer, and all were from either Massachusetts or Rhode Island. At the AMF Lang's Lanes location, Mrs. Dottie Howie (picture above), of Providence, RI won the Adult Division, and Jalen Scott-Jones (picture below), of Riverside, RI won the Youth Division. Our League Champion was Tori Whetstone, of Richmond, RI, who won the season ending Bracket Tournament with some impressive bowling. League Highs were as follows: Rai Doblmeier, of Warwick, RI won both High Average (186), and High Series (831); and Jalen Scott-Jones won the High Game (257).

Jalen

At our East Providence Lanes location, Danny Khuu, of Brockton, MA, captured the League title, our Bracket Tournament Championship, as well as the League High Average (178). Khuu also set a new Filling da Frames High Series Record with an impressive 877. The Most Improved Bowler Award went to Jadee Scott-Jones, of Riverside, RI, who finished in 4th place in the league despite being the youngest league member for the third straight summer. The Sportsmanship Award went to Steve Bodak, of Attleboro, MA. The League Highest Game was posted by Nicole Trudell, of Coventry, RI with a 246.

Filling da Frames would like to thank the staff members from East Providence Lanes, AMF Lang's Lanes and Fred Trudell. Special recognition to Manager Shawn Fitzpatrick of Lang's for making our training sessions possible.

Hope to see you all again next year! Good luck bowling this coming season.

Home Sweet Home

Senate Athletes Feel Cozy Thanks to Mgr Shawn Fitzpatrick

There's No Place Like Home! Thanks Mr. Shawn Fitzpatrick!!!! We finally feel comfortable and cozy as we enter our 10th Season here at Senate, and we owe it all to YOU-Manager Shawn Fitzpatrick.

The Providence Senate Junior Program, which began in 1999 out of AMF Lang's Lanes, has grown into a national power. The Program would like to thank AMF Lang's management and staff for its hospitality while allowing us to prosper both individually and as a program. Within those first nine-years, we have received insurmountable awards and recognition, which is a direct result of the fact that we have a bowling center that truly understands that these young people are our future. Watching these young Senate athletes bowl is like sitting on the couch with your feet up at a PBA event. Well, so I exaggerated a little but you get the picture of how well things are going. Special thanks to AMF District Manager Rob Califano for all that he has done for us as well.

Travel Team - Check them out!

Travel Team and Coach Unprepared for EP

pic of 08-09 team

On Saturday, November 8th, our travel team took the floor for its second competition of the season. The event was held at AMF Lang's Lanes, and the team was facing East Providence Juniors. This was just an awful day from the start, as Coach Marty and several members of the team were late arriving to the competition. The team had scheduled a practice session prior to the event, but never got the opportunity to do so.pic of Deanna We ended up getting swept by the East Providence team all five games, and that is a rarity for Senate. There were three reasons for this particular outcome: (1) our team never caught fire (collectively) at the same time during any of the matches; (2) giving EP over 230pins in handicap each game didn't help; and (3) Coach Marty didn't have the team physically nor mentally prepared for this travel competition. "We will be on point the rest of the way", says Coach Marty. "Mark my words"! The team was lead by Rai Doblmeier (266 game); Danny Khuu (245 game); and Deanna Outland (picture right) (225 game). To view our most recent stats, then click here. For the most current travel league results, then visit http://www.riyaba.org/travel/results/Week2/page1.htm. Our next travel match is Dec. 6th and we will be facing Kingstown Juniors at Alley Katz Lanes in Westerly.

Talented Rookies Make Immediate Impact in Travel

pic of DannyOn Saturday, October 18th, our Travel Team opened the season against Lang's at East Providence. We got off to a slow start losing the first two matches before kicking into gear and taking the final two (plus total pins). The team was lead by rookies Danny Khuu (picture left) and Jadee Scott-Jones (picture right). Both Danny and Jadee are a part of our talented rookie class that is expected to have a big impact on our season. Jadee (along with Jalen, Justin, Nicole and Rai) bowled in the starting line-up, while pic of JadeeDanny played a reserve role with veteran David Lewis. This allowed the Senate to have a huge advantage because we could insert two top-notch athletes off the bench and into the line-up with both carrying a 210 bowling average or higher. Danny led the way from a reserve role by posting a 457 two-game series. Veteran Nicole and Jadee were the only starters to bowl in all three matches and finished with a 567 and 503 series respectively. Despite not bowling to our capabilities, we no less were satisfied to come out with three wins to start the season.

Coach Marty feels that the team is only going to get better and better with each match. It's just a matter of blending all this individual talent (veterans & rookies) into one well-oiled machine (TEAM). To view our most recent stats, then click here. Also if you like to view the entire travel league results, then visit http://www.riyaba.org/travel/results/Week1/page1.htm. Our next travel match is Nov. 8th and we will be facing East Providence Juniors at AMF Lang's Lanes.

2007-08 Ocean State Champions

pic of Travel Team 07-08

Congratulations to our 2007-08 Travel Team for winning the Ocean State Travel League Championship with a balance attack and good team chemistry. The question is now, "can we defend our title in 2008-09 and REPEAT as champions?"

The Senate held Travel try-outs on September 14th, to select the 2008-09 squad which has the task of trying to REPEAT. The athletes were selected based on their Physical Game, Mental Game and Lane Play with a special focus on Making Proper Adjustments & Spare Shooting. Also all applicants were required to fill out an evaluation questionnaire before the final roster was announced. The applicants were all informed that it is not just about individual abilities, but most importantly attitude/conduct and TEAMWORK. So without further delay, I bring to you our 2008-09 Travel Team members-CLICK HERE.

Marty Jones a.k.a. "Coach Marty" will serve as the Head Coach again this season, and continue to develop each young athlete. Coach Marty is a USBC Bronze Level coach, appeared in the US Youth Bowler Magazine (fall 2008 issue) in the Exchange Section. In nine travel league seasons, Coach Marty teams have now won three state titles.

Improve Your Game with Coach Marty

Jadee in drill session

Just so you know the Providence Senate Junior Program will be conducting scheduled league practice sessions during the season to assist our athletes as they continue to develop their games for the upcoming season. A monthly calendar with the dates, time and cost of the practice sessions will be made available to all senate junior bowlers over the entire season.

Coach Marty's practices will focus on bowling fundamentals, target shooting, strength & conditioning along with bowling discussions. The intent of each training session emphasizes the importance in preparing our athletes for future scholarship tournament events. Some sessions will stress the importance of a good spare shooting game, while honing each individual into a skilled athlete. Just so you know, these (Senate) practices are not mandatory, but are available for those that want to come and practice under the watchful eye of Coach Jones. All bowlers must wear either their Senate or Filling da Frames attire to the practice session(s).

Many Senate athletes train all year round with Coach Jones and primarily practice on sport-compliant oil patterns in an effort to help better prepare them for the demanding and challenging scratch scholarship tournaments that they compete in throughout the season. East Providence Lanes & AMF Lang's Lanes, located less than fifteen minutes from each other, are our primary practice facilities. Our program offers the latest in instruction through the use of Ebonite's BowlersMAP video analysis software for teaching and monitoring effective techniques. Head Coach Marty Jones, who has over thirteen years of coaching experience, currently has produced fifteen Ocean State High Average winners.

Coach Marty also conducts Bowling Clinics geared towards both adults & youths throughout the season for those that are interested (visit bowl.com under coaching clinics to see when the next one will be). In case you didn't know, Coach Marty also works with youngsters that are not a part of the Senate program as well as adults (when time permits) who are looking to improve their skills. If you would like to make an appointment for a lesson, then contact Coach Marty at mjay43@aol.com.

Senate Star Regains Championship Form 1-Year After
Off-season Surgery

Tori lying down
Tori on bike

One year ago, Senate up and coming star bowler Tori Whetstone was in rehab after having surgery to repair the ankle on her slide foot (see photos above). The surgery was very successful, and by September 12, 2007 the cast was removed. As soon as she was giving clearance to resume bowling, she immediately contacted her coach (Marty Jones) to start working out. Through hard work, determination and perseverance Tori regained all of her bowling skills and some.

Tori with Coach Marty

By seasons end, she had progressed enough to be moved up and into the ADVANCE division of the talent-rich Senate program. Tori also won several tournaments and awards along the way. She ended the season with a 172 average, which is very good for someone who has only been bowling for two-and-a-half years. She ended with a 256 high game and her highest series was a 648. Tori has made a full recovery in one years time, and over this past summer she returned to the Filling da Frames Sport Shot Scratch Singles Summer League and won the League Championship Bracket Competition (see photo above).

Congratulations Tori on your miraculous comeback! Good luck to you in the future.

Fundraisers - We need your help!

Candy For Sale

man growing moneySenate is SELLING candy! Please know that your contributions help to reduce costs for our less-fortunate team members.

The Providence Youth Bowling Program is now trying to raise some "cash." The money that we raise through fundraisers is primarily used for equipment, uniforms, and for trips to scholarship tournaments that are out-of-state which tend to incur elevated costs that most of our members cannot afford.

Now, we're selling "Candy". I hope that you all have a sweet tooth for the program, because each child will be giving a box of candy to sell and we are hoping that this fundraiser goes over well. A prize will be giving to the child that sells the most boxes of candy. On behalf of the team, and myself, thanks again.
