This past season four former Providence Senate members attended college on NCAA bowling scholarships and competed on nationally ranked college programs. All four ladies did very well with each one cracking the starting line-ups on their respective teams. Of the four athletes, Allyson Smith (pic top left), of Taunton MA, probably had the most success from an individual standpoint while earning 1st Team All-Conference selection. Prior to this years selection, Allyson had two All-Conference 2nd Team selections in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. However, I would say that Allyson, from a team standpoint, had the least amount of success of the four young ladies. Jazmine Price (pic top right), of Riverside RI, helped her nationally ranked bowling team reach the conference finals where they fell just short of winning the championship. Jazmine came up short on earning an all-conference selection as well. The good news is that Jazmine, who will be a sophomore this season has already been appointed the 2008-09 Team Captain, and that in itself speaks volumes. Click here to read the article in the Providence Journal about her accomplishments and scholarship. Courtney Varin (pic bottom left), of West Warwick RI, also had a superb freshman campaign and like Jazmine she too fell just short of a conference championship. Individually, she finished with the ninth best average in the conference, which makes for an excited upcoming season. Courtney has had a few news articles written that have appeared in her local newspaper by Mr. James Bassett of the Kent County Times. Our fourth female on a NCAA Bowling Scholarship is (Deanna Outland - pic bottom right), who only bowled in the 2nd half of the season for the same nationally ranked team that Jazmine attended. Deanna had such an immediate individual impact that she was quickly inserted into the anchor position of her very first tournament. Unfortunately, Deanna will not return to the college, but instead will attend a local school here in RI this semester. Click here to read the article in the Providence Journal about her accomplishments and scholarship. We would like to wish each of these young ladies continued success not just with bowling BUT in life in general, and even more success in the classrooms. The program has many more outstanding up and coming bowlers. According to Coach Jones, "the best is yet to come." For information or film on any of the bowlers currently in the program, please contact Coach Jones at mjay43@aol.com. For a glimpse of one of our up and coming prospective athletes, click here. Filling da Frames Summer Leagues were a SuccessImproving Area Talent The letters "K+P=S" may appear to look like an algebraic equation to most of you as you begin to read this article, but to the thirty-four athletes that participated in Coach Marty Jones' Filling da Frames Sport Shot Summer League(s), these letters have great value to the success that they have had in the sport of bowling over the summer. So, if I say "S" leads to "C" then you must be completely lost. Well, that is good and therefore you will continue to read this article in order to find out exactly what I am referring to.
For the third consecutive summer, Coach Marty has been conducting the PBA Experience League better known as the "Filling da Frames Sport Shot Scratch Singles Summer League" in Rhode Island, which is geared towards improving area talent in Southern New England. With all the success over the years, the league has now expanded to include two locations East Providence Lanes (picture of league below) and AMF Lang's Lanes (picture of league above), plus a newly formed Adult Division at the AMF Lang's facilities. Although the majority of the summer league athletes hail from the highly successful Providence Senate Junior Program, it must be pointed out that both summer leagues were open to any and all athletes in the southern New England area that wanted to join.
The Summer League participants competed weekly, on an alternating PBA Experience Oil Patterns, in a four-game scratch singles pro-style format with a six point scoring system. In addition, Coach Marty also held a "K"nowledge and "P"ractice training session on a weekly basis that was open to all the participating athletes from both leagues. As a result, the athletes that attended these training sessions improved both physically & mentally while striving in our competitive atmosphere. The sole purpose of Filling da Frames is to improve the "S"kills of our area athletes through proper training techniques and a solid dose of a good bowling education. This proved to be quite successful, and as a result, the athletes at Filling da Frames have become so comfortable on the sport conditions that they have excelled in several scholarship events that were held over the summer. "To be honest with you, the athletes actually now prefer bowling on tougher lane conditions over house shots simply because their "C"onfidence is now off the hook - if you get my point", says Coach Marty. So there you have it knowledge plus practice equals skills, and skills leads to confidence k + p = s / s => c.
We had thirty-four league members this summer, and all were from either Massachusetts or Rhode Island. At the AMF Lang's Lanes location, Mrs. Dottie Howie (picture above), of Providence, RI won the Adult Division, and Jalen Scott-Jones (picture below), of Riverside, RI won the Youth Division. Our League Champion was Tori Whetstone, of Richmond, RI, who won the season ending Bracket Tournament with some impressive bowling. League Highs were as follows: Rai Doblmeier, of Warwick, RI won both High Average (186), and High Series (831); and Jalen Scott-Jones won the High Game (257).
At our East Providence Lanes location, Danny Khuu, of Brockton, MA, captured the League title, our Bracket Tournament Championship, as well as the League High Average (178). Khuu also set a new Filling da Frames High Series Record with an impressive 877. The Most Improved Bowler Award went to Jadee Scott-Jones, of Riverside, RI, who finished in 4th place in the league despite being the youngest league member for the third straight summer. The Sportsmanship Award went to Steve Bodak, of Attleboro, MA. The League Highest Game was posted by Nicole Trudell, of Coventry, RI with a 246. Filling da Frames would like to thank the staff members from East Providence Lanes, AMF Lang's Lanes and Fred Trudell. Special recognition to Manager Shawn Fitzpatrick of Lang's for making our training sessions possible. Hope to see you all again next year! Good luck bowling this coming season. Senate Athletes Feel Cozy Thanks to Mgr Shawn Fitzpatrick
The Providence Senate Junior Program, which began in 1999 out of AMF Lang's Lanes, has grown into a national power. The Program would like to thank AMF Lang's management and staff for its hospitality while allowing us to prosper both individually and as a program. Within those first nine-years, we have received insurmountable awards and recognition, which is a direct result of the fact that we have a bowling center that truly understands that these young people are our future. Watching these young Senate athletes bowl is like sitting on the couch with your feet up at a PBA event. Well, so I exaggerated a little but you get the picture of how well things are going. Special thanks to AMF District Manager Rob Califano for all that he has done for us as well. Home Sweet Home!

One year ago, Senate up and coming star bowler Tori Whetstone was in rehab after having surgery to repair the ankle on her slide foot (see photos above). The surgery was very successful, and by September 12, 2007 the cast was removed. As soon as she was giving clearance to resume bowling, she immediately contacted her coach (Marty Jones) to start working out. Through hard work, determination and perseverance Tori regained all of her bowling skills and some.

By seasons end, she had progressed enough to be moved up and into the ADVANCE division of the talent-rich Senate program. Tori also won several tournaments and awards along the way. She ended the season with a 172 average, which is very good for someone who has only been bowling for two-and-a-half years. She ended with a 256 high game and her highest series was a 648. Tori has made a full recovery in one years time, and over this past summer she returned to the Filling da Frames Sport Shot Scratch Singles Summer League and won the League Championship Bracket Competition (see photo above).
Congratulations Tori on your miraculous comeback! Good luck to you in the future.
Senate
is SELLING candy! Please know that your contributions help
to reduce costs for our less-fortunate team members.
The Providence Youth Bowling Program is now trying to raise some "cash." The money that we raise through fundraisers is primarily used for equipment, uniforms, and for trips to scholarship tournaments that are out-of-state which tend to incur elevated costs that most of our members cannot afford.
Now, we're selling "Candy".
I hope that you all have a sweet tooth for the program, because
each child will be giving a box of candy to sell and we are
hoping that this fundraiser goes over well. A prize will be
giving to the child that sells the most boxes of candy. On
behalf of the team, and myself, thanks again.
