For three weekends in July and August, the Providence Senate Junior Program held its 3rd Annual Youth Tournament for awards and book stipends. The event was held at a new location (East Providence Lanes) and this was the best turnout so far.

This was a Doubles Event with an optional Singles and the bowlers had a choice of either handicap or scratch divisions. The youth bowlers came from Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. The top scores were posted by the following individuals: Danny Khuu, of Brockton, MA shot a 280 game; Caitlin McCaw of East Hartford, CT rolled a 752 series; and Sarah Pimentel (see picture left) of Hope RI posted the highest handicap series with an 808. The first place winners at the event were: Matt Peter, of Mansfield, MA and Sarah in Doubles Handicap with a 1552; and Danny and Matt won the Doubles Scratch Division with a 1334 series. The winners of the Book Stipends were: Sarah Pimentel, Caitlin McCaw; Matt Peter and David Lewis (see picture right), who all won $43.50 each.

All trophies will be distributed to the winners by late September/early October and thanks for your participation. Special thanks to Monica Scott, Jadee Scott-Jones, Tori Whetstone, Josh Parthree and Laurie Trudell for their assistance in this event. A big THANKS to East Providence Lanes for hosting this event.

Rhode Island Youths Finish in 2nd Place at National Bowling Tour

On May 19th, a team of youth bowlers from the Providence Senate Youth Bowling Program, traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the Anthony J. Roberts Junior Championship Roll-off for scholarships and awards. The members of the team were Jalen Scott-Jones, of Riverside; David Lewis, of Warwick; Justin Scott-Jones, of Riverside; and Rai Doblmeier, of Warwick. (See picture above: l to r - David, Justin, Jalen, Rai, Coach Marty.) This event consisted only of the four regional champions (Eastern Champs-Providence, Central Champs-Cincinnati, Southern Champs-Memphis and the Western Champs-San Jose) with the winner being crowned the 2007 TNBA Junior Champion. Providence, who won the National Roll-offs in 2005, was looking to win their second national title. Both Rai and Justin were members of the 2005 championship team, which won when the event was held in Detroit, Michigan.

Providence came out strong capturing the top spot in the preliminary round and automatically advanced to the championship match. Team Cincinnati, Ohio which fielded the youngest youth bowlers in the event finished as the lowest seed. The team ranging in age from 10 to 14 was lead by ten-year-old Malik Grove, who carries a 171 average. This youngster from Ohio then lost to the Western Regional team from San Jose, California by a score of 922-796. Bowling on the team from California was Amber Bradbury, a member of the San Jose State Women's Bowling Team.

In the semi-finals round, Memphis won a very close match over San Jose, 1030-1017 to advance to the finals. The team from Memphis was very talented, led by Andrew Madsen, a 2005-06 All-Metro Bowling Team member and Chris Smith, the AJR Tournament MVP, who averaged 242 for the entire event.

Justin Scott-Jones with the Colonel

Unfortunately Providence lost this time around in the finals to Memphis, 971-946, despite a strong contribution from David Lewis who shot a 228 game. Providence used a balance attack throughout the event and all the bowlers on the team had their shining moments. Here is their individual tournament averages at the AJR championship roll-off:

  • Justin led the way with a 214 average;
  • anchor position bowler Rai averaged 213;
  • bowling in the scout position, David, averaged a 209 average; and
  • our lead-off bowler Jalen (and youngest member of the team at 13) averaged a 192 average for the entire competition.

The top score in the AJR Championship Roll-off was bowled by Chris Smith with a 278 game. High game for Providence was Justin (see picture above with "The Colonel") with a 252 game in the preliminary round.

Northeast Junior Scratch Tour (NeJST)

Senate Displays Talent at NeJST

NicoleOn January 13th, Team Senate (David Lewis, Alex Raedel, Jalen Scott-Jones, Nicole Trudell (picture left), Tori Whetstone, Jadee Scott-Jones and Gazmine Mason (picture right)) traveled to South Windsor, Connecticut to compete in the Northeast Junior Scratch Tour. Also in attendance, but NOT in uniform was Sarah Pimentel. The event was held on one the most challenging conditions that we have experienced to date, but we still performed very well Gazmineas the Senate always does. Of the seven uniformed members, five advanced and two captured Gold Medals. In the prep division, Gazmine "Got Game" Mason finished in first place with a victory over Tyler Bartee. Jadee "Statee" Scott-Jones won the bronze medal. In the junior girls division, Tori "da Model" Whetstone completed the first round as our lone top seed. This division ended up being an All-Senate finals with Nicole "Baby Girl" Trudell climbing the entire ladder from the fourth seed. Nicole won the gold and Tori left with the silver. Our final winner was Alex "funny a" Raedel, who had two very close matches to walk away with the silver medal. The next NeJST event that we will attend will take place in Rhode Island. We are looking forward to the event and not having to travel so far.

Bad Weather is no match for Team Senate

pic of Chris M.On December 16th, the Senate cancelled its Sunday Morning League bowling session due to bad weather conditions, but that alone could not keep Team Senate indoors. The team traveled to Brockton, MA and competed in the Northeast Junior Scratch Tour (NeJST) later that afternoon at Westgate Lanes, despite the storm warnings. Making the drive in the storm-like weather conditions were Nicole Trudell, Bobby Pacuk, Chris Moseley (picture left), Jadee Scott-Jones, Tori Whetstone (picture right), and Jalen Scott-Jones. Of this group, only Jadee failed to advance to the stepladder finals and this marked the first time in her illustrious career that she went fishing. But she had an excuse: She pic of Torialong with two more members of the team (Tori & Jalen) arrived late to the event and as a result they all received a zero score for the frames/games that they missed up to that point. Amazingly, the other two bowlers were still able to pull themselves out of their deficits primarily because they had less than five bowlers in their divisions, so they automatically made the cut. For the record, Jadee still managed to move ahead of one bowler so she did not finish in last place. Both Tori & Jalen finished in 2nd place in their divisions. This marked Tori's season debut at the NeJST since returning to league from off-season surgery on her ankle over the summer. Tori bowled great and posted a season high 230 in her final game at the event. Others that bowled well for Team Senate were: Nicole (1st place - Junior Girls), Bobby Pacuk (4th place - Junior Boys), and Chris (7th place - Major Boys). Team Senate is very happy for Chris, who has been improving steadily since joining the PS. This marked the first time in his NeJST career that he has ever advanced to the roll-off in arguably the most talented division of the tour. Excellent job to all of you!

Scratch Tour Comes to Our House

Joe Lewis Thomas Morrison

On November 18th, the Northeast Junior Scratch Tour came to our House (AMF Langs Lanes), and we had a great Senate turnout with fifteen athletes from our program competing in the event. Making their first appearances were Jordan Lewis (age 8) (picture left) and Thomas Morrison (age 11) (picture right). Neither of the two advanced to the second round, but both posted their highest games of the season during the event. Jordan tied his career high with a 139 game, and Thomas shot a 199 & 194 during the competition. As usual, we handled our business and had nine winners in all. It felt good having the event at our center and not having to travel anywhere for once. Although our athletes were treated like outsiders when adult bowlers from the Union Camp Men's League came out of the bar and cheered against us in the stepladder in favor of other RI locals, our kids simply just dug deep and stayed focus to the matter at hand. Participating for Team Senate were Gazmine Mason, Bobby Pacuk, Jalen Scott-Jones, Nicole Trudell, JaQuan Jones, Paul Judice, David Lewis, Chris Moseley, Deanna Outland, Dion Baker, Justin Scott-Jones, Alex Readel and Rai Doblmeier.

The Senate won big at the event lead by Jalen, who was the top bowler in the entire event with a 1356 total for six games. Jalen captured the Junior Boys Division Championship with an impressive 213-171 victory over Stephen Rogers. Bobby finished in 5th place in the same division losing a close match (191-194) to Creshon Morrison. Nicole won the Junior Girls title and had no opposition. In the Prep Division, Jadee won the championship and was top seed with an 1109 total. She ended up facing teammate Gazmine in the finals making it an All-Senate title match. Gazmine climbed the ladder with some impressive bowling beating three boys along the way. Deanna was the top seed in the Girls Open Division with an 1179 total. She ended up finishing in 2nd place after losing to Amanda Labosssiere in the finals (174-200). In the Collegiate Boys Division, Rai was the top seed and won the championship over another RI bowler and former Senate member Chris Girard (236-216). Rai began the day with a 147 game and still ended up as the top seed by two pins with 1328 six game total. Justin finished as the third qualifier with a six game total of 1295. He won his first head to head match (258-224), but then lost to Chris (225-234) earning the bronze medal. In the Major Boys Division, David made the roll-off, but finished in 8th place after shooting a 137 game.

Not making the cut, but still earning a spot at the prestigious Junior Gold Event was Alex with a six game total of 1182. He now will participate in the 2008 National Tournament in Detroit, MI in July against many of the best youth bowlers in the nation. All in all, it was a very good day for Team Senate. I just hope that Kathi McCaw (Tournament Director) will schedule a return trip to AMF Langs Lanes again in the future, despite the fact that management decided against applying a sport condition and/or re-dressing the lanes prior to the youth competition.

With NO League, Senate Travels to Vermont for NeJST

pic of DeannaOn November 11th, we had no league bowling due to the NEBA being held at our bowling center, so Team Senate traveled to Springfield, Vermont to compete in the Northeast Junior Scratch Tour. Making the three-hour trip were Jadee Scott-Jones, Bobby Pacuk, Jalen Scott-Jones, Nicole Trudell, Chris Moseley, David Lewis, JaQuan Jones, Gian Papa, Deanna Outland (picture left), Justin Scott-Jones, Alex Raedel and Rai Doblmeier. The competition was held on a house shot condition, and we advanced nine out of our twelve athletes. However, our only champion was Deanna, who won the Girls Open Division. Alex finished in 2nd Place in the Collegiate Boys Division followed by Rai (3rd) and Justin (5th). In the Junior Division Girls, Nicole finished in 2nd place. Bobby came in 4th and Jalen 5th in the Junior Boys Division. Jadee ended up coming in 3rd in the Prep Division. Our top finisher in the Major Boys Division was Gian (8th), while all the rest of our team went fishing after the first round. All in all, we had a wonderful trip/tour and we all went to Pizza Hut afterwards for dinner before heading back home.

Jadee Knows the Way, While Others Get Lost on Fishing Trip

Jadee JonesOn October 28th, ten members of our team traveled to South Windsor, Connecticut to compete in the Northeast Junior Scratch Tour. The event was held on a sport condition and our participants were as follows: Gazmine Mason, Jadee Scott-Jones, Nicole Trudell, Bobby Pacuk, Jalen Scott-Jones, Gian Papa, Chris Moseley, Paul Judice, David Lewis and Rai Doblmeier. This was our worst outing ever as SIX of our ten athletes did not advance past the first round (went fishing). Five of the six got lost driving to the competition and therefore arrived just as practice was about to begin. They basically arrived late and left early, proving that they could not find the right path to the bowling center nor the strike pocket.

The good news was that out of the four that did advance, three were top seeded in their divisions. The top seeds were Nicole, Jalen and Jadee with Gazmine qualifying as the four seed. Only Jadee was able to bring home the gold and needed some clutch bowling in the tenth frame to seal the victory, 171-161. Nicole came up short in the tenth frame of the finals and earned the silver medal losing by a pin, 208-207. She actually needed a double to win. Also taking home the silver was Jalen, who lost despite bowling with a swollen thumb. Our final winner was Gazmine, who ended up in 5th place in her first NeJST of the season. We expect to do better at the next tournament, and request that all drivers follow Coach Marty to the events as opposed to taking off on their own and getting lost stopping for bait.

Rhode Island State Champs Cruise to Victory

On September 30th, ten members of the Senate Bowling Team (Alex Raedel, Justin Scott-Jones, Chris Moseley, Bobby Pacuk, Jalen Scott-Jones, Nicole Trudell (picture left), David Lewis, Gian Papa, Deanna Outland and Rai Doblmeier (picture right)) traveled to Malden, MA to compete in the Northeast Junior Scratch Tour. Once again, seven out of the ten athletes that the program brought to the event advanced, and both Nicole (Junior Girls) and Rai (College Boys) earned the top seeds in their divisions.

Rai (the 2007 State Pepsi Champion) posted the highest six game total of day for all the NeJST participants and was the top qualifier after six games with an unbelievable 1475 total (an average of 245). Despite bowling his lowest score (219) in the championship match, he was still victorious and captured the division title. Nicole (the 2006 & 2007 State Pepsi Champion) breezed through her division field by earning the top spot by 198 pins over the second seeded bowler. She then advanced to the finals were she easily won, 187-146. Others that bowled well for Senate were: Jalen - 2nd Place & Bobby 5th Place in the junior boys division; David - 3rd Place & Gian 4th Place in the major boys division; and Deanna - 4th Place in the girls open division. To learn more about the Northeast Junior Scratch Tour and its schedule of events, visit their website at: http://nejst.blogspot.com. This is a very well ran event and the Tour Director, Kathi McCaw, does an outstanding job.

Senate Southpaws Win First Tournament Title

picture of Jalen
picture of Alex

On September 9th, ten members of our team (Jadee Scott-Jones, Bobby Pacuk, Jalen Scott-Jones (see picture left), Nicole Trudell, David Lewis, Chris Moseley, Gian Papa, Sarah Pimentel, Alex Raedel (see picture right) and Rai Doblmeier) began their day bowling in the first day of league and then traveled to Springfield, Massachusetts to compete in the Northeast Junior Scratch Tour. The event was held at AMF Chicopee Lanes on the PBA Shark Pattern.

The team preformed quite well and that could be a direct tribute to the fact that the majority of them participated in the "Filling da Frames Youth League" over the summer. The Senate's Chris Moseley posted the tournaments highest game after the first qualifying round with a 245. Seven of our ten bowlers advanced to the second round with Jadee, Nicole and Jalen all earning the top seeds in their divisions. Newcomer Bobby Pacuk also advanced along with Sarah, who was making her NeJST debut. Our final two bowlers that advanced were regulars Alex and Rai.

Sarah and Bobby bowled very well on this difficult shot and both ended up finishing in 5th place in their divisions. Sarah also bowled a 191 game during the event. Rai won his first stepladder match, but then lost to Alex for a 4th place finish. Alex then went on to beat two more bowlers for the College Division Championship, while posting a 245 game in the finals. Both Jadee (preps) and Nicole (junior girls) were more than 150 pins ahead of the second seeds, while bowling the shark pattern. Unfortunately, they fell short when the event was moved to a house shot to accommodate leagues that were coming in. Our other champion was Jalen, who won the Junior Boys Division with a much improved spare game. Congratulations to all of you and special thanks to Kathi McCaw for running and outstanding tournament.

Ocean State (USBC) Adult/child Tour

Smallest State Program Dominates while Carrying Adult Partners

Michael Maron pic of Gazmine

On November 25th, the Providence Senate Juniors competed in the Ocean State USBC Adult/child Tournament, which was held at AMF Lang's Lanes, in Cranston. This was the first state event of the 2007-08 season and the Senate dominated with eight winners in all. Only East Providence Juniors, which is the largest youth program in the state with over 275 bowlers, had more winners than Senate with a total of nine. Providence Senate, which only has twenty-seven athletes in its entire program, still dominated the state event (mainly in the high average divisions).

Our athletes bowled great and carried their adult teammates for the most part. Finishing in first place in the boys 121 to 150 Average Division was Michael "the Michelin Man" Maron (picture left), who bowled an outstanding 187 game & 524 series. Two Senate youngsters Jadee "Statee" Scott-Jones & Gazmine Mason (picture right) (both 11 years old) took the top two spots in the Girls Top Average Division (151 and up). Jadee shot a 242 game and 578 series to earn 1st place. Gazmine bowled a 189 game and 536 series to finish in 2nd place. Our other five winners all come from the Boys Highest Average division lead by Jalen "Stirkx" Scott-Jones, who took both 2nd and 3rd place with two different adult partners. Jalen's tournament highs were a 249 game and a 709 series. Rai "MVP" Doblmeier, who shot a 290 game and 742 series came in 5th place. He finished in a 5th place tie with rookie Chris "Sugar Shane" Moseley, who posted a 210 and 605 series. Our final winner was Paul "Juice" Judice, who bowled a 247 game and 646 series for a 7th place finish.

Other Senate athletes that deserve honorable mention because they bowled well, but came up short mainly because their adult partner let them down were: Deanna Outland 257 game & 642 series; Dion Baker 224 game & 638 series; Justin Scott-Jones 233 game & 626 series; David Lewis 245 game & 623 series; and Anita-Marie Mott 124 game & 298 series. To view the complete list of winners, then click here. Our next RI USBC YA Tournament will be on the weekend of January 19-20 where we will be bowling in Singles, Doubles and Teams events. Five bowlers advanced to match play, and it was Jadee who had the most success. Jadee finished with a 7-1 record; Rai was 5-3; Alex, Deanna and Nicole all finished with 3-5 records. Deanna, who was on fire the first day, cooled down some and managed to finish in 6th place for the event, Alex finished in 5th place and Nicole also came in 6th in her division.
